How to Show Up When Customers Ask ChatGPT Who to Call

July 23, 2026

Do this right now: open ChatGPT and ask, "Who should I call for [your service] in [your town]?"

If your business came up — good, you're ahead. If it didn't, you just watched a customer walk past you, because that exact question is being asked thousands of times a day, and unlike Google's ten blue links, AI gives back two or three names. There is no page two.

How AI decides who to name

AI assistants don't have a secret ranking. They assemble answers from the signals they can see: your Google Business Profile, your review count and rating, local directories, your website's content, and what other sites say about you. When those signals are dense and consistent, you get named. When they're thin or contradictory, the AI names someone else — or worse, sends people to a generic directory.

We measure this for a living (we run a monthly "ask test" — the same questions a customer would ask, scored on whether a business gets named), and the pattern is consistent: businesses get named where their signals are strong and vanish where they're thin — even great businesses, even in their own backyard.

The six signals that move it

1. Review depth — count, recency, and response rate. AI treats review activity as evidence you're real and good.

2. A complete Google Business Profile — services listed, photos current, Q&A answered, posting activity.

3. Consistency everywhere — same name, address, phone, and description across your site and directories. Contradictions read as risk.

4. Answer-shaped content — pages on your site that actually answer the questions customers ask ("what does X cost," "how do I choose Y"). AI quotes what it can read.

5. Being listed where AI already looks — the local directories and industry sites AI cites when it has nothing better.

6. Time — these signals compound. The businesses named today started before their competitors did.

The part nobody tells you

You can't buy your way into the answer (AI-search ads exist, but they're labeled and separate). Organic AI visibility is earned with the boring signals above, done consistently — which is exactly why it's defensible once you have it.
